KARACHI: The seat of Wassem Akhtar as mayor of Karachi is said to be in danger after his nomination in the case of May 12, 2007, when alleged firing and violence killed over 40 people in Karachi, legal experts opined. Sachal Police Station and New Malir City Police Station inducted Waseem in two different cases on same pretext, police confirmed.
Official sources said Waseem had already accepted his involvement before a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in these cases. Senior Advocate M Nasir said there was possibility that Waseem would have to face the case’s proceedings for a prolonged time and during this period, he would not be removed from seat of major until a decision was made convicting him.
Waseem could be removed from this position and Dr Arshad A Vohra could be given additional responsibility as the caretaker mayor of Karachi. Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) said in case of disqualification of Waseem, the party had already decided that Vohra and Rehan Hashmi, who is the current Chairman District Municipal Corporation Central would be shortlisted for the role.
